How the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs Cambodia Empowers Women Entrepreneurs
“I never imagined that, at 50 years old, I would one day pitch my traditional business in English—with this level of confidence.”
That’s what Ms. Soriya Ly proudly shared after BizFest, the closing celebration of the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) program.
She is one of 29 Cambodian women entrepreneurs who joined this journey—not only to grow their businesses, but also to build strong networks and prepare for today’s fast-changing economy.

A Little Context on the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE)
The Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) is a global initiative—now brought to Cambodia—that empowers women entrepreneurs with the knowledge, networks, and resources they need to launch and scale successful businesses.
Through AWE, women gain access to an online learning platform, mentorship, immersion visits to leading companies in Cambodia, and a strong peer network. In addition, they can explore funding and partnership opportunities with businesses in the region and the United States.
In Cambodia, Impact Hub Phnom Penh is proud to implement the AWE program for the very first time. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the U.S. Embassy Phnom Penh and Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia for their continued support in making this program possible.
Immersion Field Visit: Turning Dreams into Reality
One of the most eye-opening experiences was a three-day Immersion Field Visit.
Participants visited leading companies such as Courtyard by Marriott, LyLy Food, Confirel, Coca-Cola, Brown Coffee and Bakery, Visa, and Chip Mong 271 Mega Mall.
There, they learned how these businesses operate, manage teams, and maintain high standards. As a result, the experience inspired new ideas, built confidence, and connected the women to Cambodia’s wider business community.
For Sokunthea, founder of ME DARM, the visit became a turning point — where opportunity met preparation.
As a local noodle handicraft business owner, she had always dreamed of seeing her products on the shelves of a major retail mall like Chip Mong. For a long time, that dream felt out of reach.
“As a small business owner, retail standards, quality requirements, and documentation always felt too complicated,” she shared. “But everything changed during the AWE field visit to Chip Mong Mall.”
During the visit, Sokunthea spoke directly with the Chip Mong team. She shared her challenges openly and asked for guidance. To her surprise, they listened.
After that, she stayed in touch, followed their advice, and worked hard to improve her product standards. By May, her dream became reality — her products were officially stocked in all Chip Mong malls across Cambodia.
“This milestone increased my sales and boosted my brand visibility,” she said. “I’m deeply grateful to AWE for opening doors I never thought I could walk through.”
More Than a Program: A Sisterhood
Ms. Sokunthea’s success is just one example of what participants achieved. But the AWE journey gave them something equally powerful: a sense of sisterhood.
At first, most participants were strangers from different backgrounds, industries, and provinces. Over time, they became a close network of support, sharing experiences, advice, and encouragement.
Many now say they’ve gained 29 new sisters—women who understand the challenges of building a business and continue to support each other even after the program ended.
A Space for Mothers to Thrive
The AWE program also created a supportive space for mothers to grow as entrepreneurs.
Women didn’t have to choose between family and business. In fact, children were often present during sessions, learning alongside their mothers. This nurturing environment showed participants that it’s possible to be both dedicated businesswomen and caring parents—without compromise.
Celebrating Success: AWE BizFest and What’s Next
The journey concluded with BizFest, a vibrant and joyful celebration of the participants’ hard work and growth.
At the event:
- 29 women entrepreneurs pitched their businesses in English, showcasing confidence and vision.
- 3 entrepreneurs received USD 2,000 each to grow their ventures.
- The AWEsome Market displayed a wide variety of products and services from all participants.
- The day ended with cultural performances and a fashion show, celebrating the creativity and talent of the entrepreneurs.
As the AWE pilot program concludes, one thing is clear: this is just the beginning. With sharpened skills, expanded networks, and renewed confidence, women are stepping forward not just as entrepreneurs, but as leaders, mentors, and role models.
Because when women believe in themselves—AWEsome things happen.
If you want to learn more about the first AWE program in Cambodia, we’d love to connect and share their inspiring journey!
