Mobilizing young leaders for climate action
Project Green Jobs hosted young leaders from across ASEAN in Cambodia to explore careers that contribute to environmental sustainability. We welcomed 11 Youth Volunteers from across the region selected to be part of the eMpowering Youths Across ASEAN Programme Cohort 3, a youth leadership and cross-cultural exchange program led by the ASEAN Foundation and Maybank Foundation.
Through workshops, field visits, and other hands-on experiences in Battambang province, participants immersed themselves in local communities and with local changemakers. Over the course of 11 days together, we challenged the cohort to deepen their understanding of climate action and green jobs. We inspired participants to continue leading change in their respective communities with deeper critical thinking and global awareness. And finally, we delivered a fun and unforgettable experience that forged lifelong friendships among an incredible group of young leaders.
Building inspiration and commitment around green careers
Hands-on learning
We provided a fun and hands-on learning experience, introducing participants to sustainable entrepreneurs in Battambang province through field trips and collaborative activities. The young leaders gained insights into sustainable business models and were inspired by the stories of innovative local ventures like Khmer Banana Weaving, Junlen Meas, Phare Ponleu Selpak, and Phum Impact Battambang.
Learning into practice
Throughout the program, the cohort learned about inspiring local initiatives. Then, it was their turn. Ignited with ideas and drive, the Youth Volunteers developed 4 project ideas around climate action to be collaboratively implemented across their home communities after the program.
Lasting friendships & community
One of the most important outcomes of the project? Friendships and community. The Youth Volunteers from different backgrounds came together, forming lasting bonds that crossed borders. These personal and professional networks are vital as these young changemakers embark on careers in environmental impact.
“It was a cultural eye-opening experience for me. People here are really friendly, and they taught us many things that I personally never learned before. One of the big highlights is the visit at Khmer Banana Weaving, where the founder is using banana fibers to produce the final products. It’s a big inspiration for me to learn from these entrepreneurs advocating for reusing all the natural resources around us.”
