Mainstreaming entrepreneurship education in Cambodian higher ed
What happens when you bring together education, technology, and entrepreneurship, nationwide? You have the power to inspire and grow the next generation of leaders.
SmartStart Unipreneur Learning Platform (ULP) is the first Cambodian online learning program that introduces entrepreneurship through a blended online-offline learning approach. Designed and built in Cambodia as an initiative between Smart Axiata and Impact Hub Phnom Penh, the goal of the learning platform and course — formally accredited for use in public and private universities — is to develop students’ mindsets and technical capabilities in entrepreneurship.
Next generation learning
Holistic Curriculum
The curriculum, which has been accredited by the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport, includes 30 hours of course learning time plus 15 hours of practicum activities and independent learning. It’s designed to be delivered through a 15-week course.
Custom Digital Platform
We developed a dedicated learning management system available on desktop and via our custom-made app, so students can learn from any device, anywhere with an internet connection. Instructors have their own platform to monitor and manage students’ progress.
Local Solutions, Global Exposure
The course material teaches global theories that have been adapted for relevance in the Cambodian market. The course also features local entrepreneurs’ success stories — thus introducing students to global innovation while bringing them closer to the local startup ecosystem.
Learning by Doing
The course is optimized for deeper learning through role play videos, written text, videos, quizzes, and practical activities both online and offline, individual and collaborative. It’s an engaging, student-centered approach to teaching and learning, departing from traditional styles of lecture.
Fully bilingual
Learners can easily toggle between content in English and Khmer language, making high-quality entrepreneurship education more accessible for young people in Cambodia.
Integrated
The majority of our university partners deliver the curriculum as a compulsory course as part of the relevant major. The course is taught by existing university lecturers, who we have trained in our methodology and course content.

Hands-on teaching preparation
How can we best train and prepare lecturers from our partner universities to deliver the SmartStart ULP course? Put them in the shoes of their students.
We organized a 3-day “ULP Lecturer Hackathon” to train university lecturers on design thinking, ideation, business model canvas, and participatory teaching methodologies. They then did a real business simulation: developing an ICT idea to solve a societal challenge in just 48 hours, and pitching their business idea to a panel of judges. Our 2022 ULP Lecturer Hackathon had 30 lecturers from 9 universities participate.
