Equipping the Next Generation of Changemakers
In 2019, we surveyed over 800 youth in Siem Reap and Battambang. The top two concerns rated in both provinces were “Lack of personal development opportunities” and “Lack of voice/chance for youth to express their concerns.”
These are gaps we met head-on through the Changemakers Scale Up program: a leadership program to give youth the tools, resources, and inner drive to ‘be the change they wish to see in the world.’ We developed a unique blended learning approach to equip young people across Cambodia with essential skills for career selection, entrepreneurship, and community impact. Through interactive modules on our custom-made online learning platform and offline gatherings, participants built their “entrepreneurial mindset” along with support from local trainers and facilitators. We also supported a subset of young leaders with mini-grants to implement community projects.
Our Core Activities
Blended Learning Course
We developed a three-week blended learning course in Khmer language comprised of 7 online modules on 21st Century skills, leadership, entrepreneurial mindset, leadership, and more, paired with offline coaching.
Training of Trainers
We trained 14 local facilitators from Battambang, Siem Reap, Kampong Cham, and Kampot over 8 sessions and 20+ hours: a walk-through experience providing the training and facilitation skills to deliver our Changemakers blended learning course.
Eight Changemaker Cohorts
218 youth (72% female) joined 8 cohorts of our blended learning program across 4 provinces. In teams, they initiated 41 project ideas and 31 proposals during the program.
Mini Action Fund
We awarded $300 each to 20 youth-led projects (by Changemakers alumni) to run small civic engagement projects in their communities.
Online Masterclasses
We organized 13 online masterclasses for Changemakers alumni and the public on project management, teamwork, and leadership. 743 learners enrolled!
Continued Alumni Engagement
We held a series of online gatherings for our Changemakers alumni to maintain an active peer community and facilitate dialogue and learning on topics like personal branding, extracurricular opportunities, and career development.
“I now can understand better about myself and can see my dream and vision clearer. I have more confidence talking to people regardless of their age and background. I’ve learned how to set up a project. I also get to learn about socioeconomic rights. And I really love and appreciate my local trainers, they are role models, and very motivational. After graduating from this program, I want to continue the environmental project I’ve come up with with the team I formed in the Changemakers program.”

Our blended learning approach
Through Changemakers Scale Up, we made learning more accessible to young people across Cambodia via a blended learning approach. We developed a 7-module curriculum (with 57 individual course videos and 9 worksheets) and built an interactive online platform. We engaged 23 experts to develop and film the course content in Khmer.
For participants in our Changemakers Scale Up cohort, online self-study was complemented with offline (or online, during the Covid-19 pandemic!) peer discussion groups and coaching with dedicated program facilitators. For everyone else, the course is still accessible on-demand on Impact Hub Phnom Penh’s online learning platform.
“When I want to learn something it is hard to find what I want to learn here in Siem Reap. I’m really interested in leadership and entrepreneurship but it is hard to find a workshop to attend. And it is costly to attend it here. It is really nice to see that a program like Changemaker can happen in Siem Reap.”

Our Changemakers Social Incubator
We launched another initiative, a “Social Incubator,” as part of our broader Changemakers initiative to provide more extensive support to local youth leaders to tackle community challenges.
